  • For some reason, I have to take pictures.

Ever since, a long time ago, when I first noticed the peculiar reaction I had when looking at the black and white photos of the likes of Walker Evans and Lewis Hine, and even the sad Storyville portraits of E.J. Bellocq, a reaction I can't quite describe accurately except that it's like quenching your thirst on a scorching hot day with the perfect cool glass of water, I picked up my own first camera, a 35mm Minolta X700, and started trying create some of that magic myself.

Of course, back then, you couldn't share your images online like today, so other than appreciating image reproductions in books or magazines, you had to have a print. And there's no substitute for a beautiful print. It's like buying a record vs. streaming the music - the music does sound great, but it's just not the same as holding the record cover in your hands.

Fast forward to today's digital age, and the modern photographic prints are also beautiful. And for me, the bigger the better. In a perfect world, I want the image on the wall to call my attention from 10 feet away, 20 feet away, demanding that I come over for a closer look, and then compelling me to stay to take it all in.

And finally, something I've come to appreciate along the way, is that Art should be accessible to the everyday person, not only in upscale galleries, but also in our common everyday spaces. It's good for you to be able to stop once in awhile, pause your concerns, and drink that glass of water.
